I love science fiction because it so often features strong women in leading roles. Whether the little girl in A Wrinkle in Time, the badass Zoe in Firefly or Lieutenant Uhura, strong women, and often black women, constantly feature in sci-fi. Today, amongst the whimpering girls of Twilight and unspeakable travesties of those awful CW shows there is finally another girl to look up to. Katniss is brave, strong, talented, and very, very human. Her humanity is important because our girls need to understand that everyone, no matter how strong or rich or famous or accomplished, is still human in the end, and that it’s okay for them to be human too.
