We were lucky to be featured on TV and the website for Black History Month. Check us out HERE!!
It’s the end of our second school year! To celebrate, the incredible ladies of SALT treated our girls to a night of dinner and bocce at Pinstripes Georgetown! The girls had a great time trying new foods like goat cheese, smoked salmon and a wide variety of indulgent desserts. Then they played a mean game of bocce, a game we all had to learn. At the end of the night, the girls received a big stack of books from First Book. They have plenty of reading to keep them busy!
This has been an amazing year for us. We saw Hillary Clinton and Marion Wright Edelman speak. We attended a Nats Game, the National STEM Festival, and Black Girls Rock and had a sleepover at the Ritz. We did community service in a national park, a community garden and with middle school girls learning STEM. We met the President and were featured on BET! In between we studied for the SAT, learned about etiquette, healthy living, study skills, self-respect, dance, yoga and so much more.
Our amazing girls, volunteers, Leadership Team and sponsors made this year possible and for that we say THANK YOU.
This fall we have a lot of BIG changes coming. New partnerships, new programming, our first class of seniors and much much more. There are also lots of new opportunities to get involved! Be on the lookout for Leadership Team announcements, new volunteer signups, and a BIG event in September! Our third year will be the biggest and best so far, we hope you’re with us!

Our girls had an extraordinary experience today. Thanks to my amazing new company, The Advisory Board Company, four of our girls were invited to attend the reception for the WNBA national champions, the Minnesota Lynx. Not only did the girls get to attend the reception, they sat in the front row for the President’s speech, got a tour of the White House, and they MET THE PRESIDENT!! Best. Day. Ever.
We are so lucky to live in a city where young girls can go to the White House on a school day. The experiences and opportunities in this city are extraordinary, and MiT is working hard to provide as many of them as possible for our girls. We are so lucky to have partners and sponsors who care as much about our girls as we do. Thank you ABC!!
MiT has had SO MUCH going on, we haven’t even had time to update our website! So what have we been up to?
- We went to Black Girls Rock: One Mic at the Kennedy Center, where we saw MC Lyte, Lauryn Hill and more!
- We had amazing seats at a Nationals Game and enjoyed a Plain White T’s concert after the game.
- We had a sleepover at The Ritz where we learned about etiquette from a wonderful teacher, tried on prom dresses donated to us by Howard University’s Fashion Law Week and Womble Carlyle, and we tried on accessories and handbags donated by Andrea’s Beau!
- We worked in a community garden in Columbia Heights, planted our own plants and made a Caprese salad fresh from the garden!
- We have been studying for the SAT every Sunday afternoon with a very dedicated volunteer and our incredibly hard working girls.
- We attended the US Science and Engineering Festival where our founder, Kat, spoke on two panels and the girls were able to explore careers in STEM!
It’s been an amazing few months!
The incredible ladies of DC’s Fashion Law Week have chosen Michelle in Training as this year’s non-profit partner! In addition to inviting the girls to the annual Fashion Show and making a donation, FLW is hosting a dress drive to collect prom dresses for our girls! If you would like to donate, email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a pick up or bring your dress to the show!
Thank you Fashion Law Week!!
For this semester’s community service day, our girls led groups of middle school girls at the AKA’s annual STEM conference. From leading the girls to each session to helping them with materials and lessons in classes about smart social media habits, robotics, chemistry and even trademarks. Learning STEM and volunteering? Amazing.
Big thanks to our amazing Community Service Chair Jazmyn Singleton for planning this event!
This weekend our 16s had their annual Career Networking Brunch. This is an awesome opportunity for them to enjoy the most DC pastime after happy hour- brunch- while interacting with a group of young professional women with a variety of careers. This year’s brunch was sponsored by the ladies of Sisters Achieving Life Together, or S.A.L.T. SALT is a group of young women who go through life together, from socializing to supporting each other and even vacationing together. They didn’t just cook an awesome brunch for us, but they spent the morning telling the girls all about life, careers, school and everything in between. The brunch was so amazing that we had an MiT first, the girls were asking their favorite S.A.L.T. member to be their mentors before they would leave the house!
Surrounding our girls with amazing role models is what it’s all about and the women of S.A.L.T. certainly fit the bill. Thanks ladies!
